About the Author

Dr. Thomas L. Altshuler is a scientist, engineer, educator, researcher, and author whose career has been shaped by a lifelong interest in understanding complex ideas and making them easier to explain. He earned his doctorate in physical metallurgy, or Materials Science, from Oxford University in the United Kingdom and later served as a professor in the engineering departments at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and Northeastern University in Massachusetts.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Altshuler founded and operated Advanced Materials Laboratory, Inc., where he conducted research in the physics of materials. His professional achievements include receiving an IR 100 Award in 1973 and publishing 35 scientific papers, including work that appeared in peer-reviewed technical journals such as International Journal of Thermophysics and Metals.

His interest in technology extends across more than six decades of working with computers. That experience, combined with his background as a university professor and his own firsthand understanding of aging, led him to create practical technology guides for seniors and others who want straightforward help with modern devices. The Mac manuscript specifically notes that, at age 97, Dr. Altshuler understands many of the challenges older adults may face when learning to use new technology.

Through his Basics Made Simple books, Dr. Altshuler focuses on the features people are most likely to use in everyday life. His approach emphasizes clear explanations, helpful visuals, manageable steps, and practical instruction rather than unnecessary technical detail. Whether explaining an iPhone or a Mac computer, his goal is to help readers become more comfortable, capable, and confident with technology at their own pace.
